'Liber Fra. Combe ex coenobio Ash[    ] ex dono Avunculi ibidem abbatis domini Thomae Waterhouse' (fol. 1r, s. xvii). Thomas Waterhouse, last rector, lived at Hempstead Bury with his nephew Richard Combes (d. 1595) whose son was Francis Combes (?1554–1625).
